On 14th January, 1916, 3rd Rifle Brigade of 17 Brigade, 24th Division were relieved from the Potijze trenches in the Ypres salient and moved back to H camp at Ouderdom where for the rest of the month they provided working and carrying parties. On 20th January,150 men from 3rd Rifle Brigade were engaged in these duties when they became the target of the enemy artillery which resulted in 5 men being killed, one of whom was Frank McKee.
